History of West End Shows
The roots of West End Shows are in London after the English Reformation, where theaters flourished and became public playhouses. However, Puritans weren’t happy and wanted the ‘sinful’ theaters closed.
Fortunately, the Puritan resolution was declared void in 1660 (after the Restoration), leading to a widespread of art. The Theatre Royal in Bridges Street was the first West End Theater. A fire destroyed it nine years later. It was in the same location where the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, is now present. In fact, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane was built to replace the previous structure.
In the decades that followed, new theaters mushroomed all over the West End. Oscar Wilde’s second play (a comedy), A Woman of No Importance, was staged at Haymarket Theatre in 1893.
The West End shows became so popular that the companies toured to other countries like America and performed them for the local audience. The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie, Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, and The Phantom of the Opera musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber are the top running West End shows.
