USL is a division two professional football championship where men participate in different games under their domestic clubs. Headquartered in Tampa, the league ranks second in the Major League soccer hierarchy. The teams, too, correspond to their Major League affiliations.
But, not all teams are affiliated under the same banner. Some collaborate with Division III or League 1. Levels ease out the game and optimize the participation fair and square. Division II players also get to play domestic or US-based games and, based on their performance, get promoted to the Major League, all under the guidance of the North American Soccer Federation.
The format of USL is slightly different. Division II or USL play only domestic games. Throughout March until September, all of the teams practice in 28 regular-season games. This comprises a total of 22-games, following the double round-robin schedule. The final six then play against regional opponents.
Lastly, the top six finishers from each clashing conference advance to the October playoffs. Now from here, the format is similar to the major leagues. The playoffs here, too, consist of single-game knockouts. These six domestic finishers play against each other in three different matches.
Following these three rounds of intra-conference play, two clubs emerge as the final contenders for the domestic cup. These champions then fight for the famous US Open Cup.
