Skating

Skating is a multi-format sport that has become quite popular over the last few decades. Both amateur roller skating and synchronized professional ice skating have a newfound fan base among the genZ.

The Sport On Wheels

Now, the wheels might be a stretch, but in the easiest of terms, the event requires skates. So, the event can formally be defined as any group of activity or sport played with the participant being on a skate gliding on a surface.

This surface can be of anything. It can be an indoor or outdoor ice rink, a track, a slope, or a proscenium stage for performances. All of it falls under the category of skating. Owing to its immense popularity, the game is played on different national and international stages during multiple seasons.

Divisions of Skating

Skating has different subgroups based on the region and the age group. Still, the primary division is based on the surfaces it’s performed on. Hence, to broadly categorize, the sport can be divided into ice, snow, and hard surface groups.

Ice

The ice surface comprises rinks and can be performed on skateboards and skating shoes. The events of this category include:

  • In figure skating, individuals, duos, or ensembles perform on ice using figure skates.
  • Synchronized skating: teams of eight to sixteen compete against others.
  • Speed skating: contestants race each other over a set distance on skates.
  • Short-track: a variety of competitive ice skating.
  • Tour skating: long-distance ice skating on natural ice.

Apart from these, people skate on hard surfaces using roller skates or in a hybrid format on snow.

You can watch all of these events by just getting your first ticket to a skating event.
