American Rodeo: The Rider's Game

American Rodeo today is a cultural phenomenon. The image of the silhouette of a rider on a horse is the official mascot of the state of Wyoming, taken from the Rodeo itself.

The sport has transcended the boundaries of the western states like Texas or Wyoming and has reached places like Alberta, Canada. As for the popularity of the game, it's the official state sport of North Dakota, Wyoming, and Texas.

The sport is organized officially by Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association and the Women's Professional Rodeo Association on a national level. The states and regional leagues govern the rules of collegiate, scholastic, and intercollegiate events related to the same.

The Competitions

There are thousands of Rodeos happening all over the world in different formats. You can see different timed and untimed events coming under Rodeo's umbrella term. There is usually a Steer, and the Cowboy or the Queen mounts the steer and ensures it reaches the destined place within the least duration possible.

There aren't specified tracks but fields or indoor grounds with no laps or circles. You can say that it is one of the most unorganized-organized games ever. Some of the popular formats of the sport include:

  • Calf Roping
  • Bull Riding
  • Goat Tying
  • Steer Wrestling
  • Team Roping
  • Bareback Bronc Riding
  • Saddle Bronc
  • Breakaway Roping
  • Barrel Racing

These events trace their roots back to the rural backdrop it is set in. A typical rodeo is always going to be a rough track game. It essentially starts with a Grand Heroic Entry of the rider and the bronc with a flag that represents the state or the country.

With the entry, the race starts, and within a few laps, the game commences. It can get pretty intense and fun as the steer is usually untrained for tracks and formal events.

You, too, can be a part of this joy ride by getting the first ticket to the Rodeo.
