Opera Shows

An opera is a musical drama with vocals and instruments blended with each other to tell a story. Opera shows have been popular for a long time in Europe and America. The first-ever opera show in the American colonies was performed in 1735.

The New Orleans Opera Association has been actively performing operas since 1743. Leading opera artists like Mario Lanza, Luciano Pavarotti, and Beverly Sills performed in New Orleans.

The first opera was performed in 1796 in New Orleans, which became The Opera Capital of North America. During the period 1859-to 1919, the French Opera house was the center of social life in New Orleans. It was a sad moment when the opera house was destroyed by fire.

The US has various opera companies that tour across the country and around the world every year. Make your reservations in advance to grab the best seats in opera houses.

The Ups and Downs of Opera

Opera faced a similar struggle as theater and other arts. The Puritans considered these a sin and had a tight rein on the communities they ruled. Life was hard for people, and many had struggled to even survive in those conditions. Entertainment had no place when life became tough.

The troupes from Europe would land occasionally in America to perform down South. This eased the restrictions a little. The troupes would perform to music, and soon it got to be called opera. Ballad operas became a thing after the performance of Beggar’s Opera by John Gay in New York in 1750.

Opera performances (and a few other ‘luxuries’) were banned by the then Congress government in 1774. Another anti-theater law was passed in 1778. Though Congress repealed the laws in 1789, the opposition continued into the early 1800s.

The 19th century was a better period for opera artists as more and more buildings were constructed for the events. However, the opera houses either had a commercial/ entertainment design or municipal/ entertainment design. The opera houses were a hub of community activities between 1889 and 1936.

Changes were made to the opera house designs to make them more suitable for opera shows instead of using the places as multipurpose buildings. There are 125 opera houses in the US.

The Metropolitan Opera House, NYC, built in 1883; moved to a different location in 1996 is one of the best opera houses to enjoy a live performance. The LA Opera, Los Angeles, which was built in 1986, is the fourth largest in the country, and a must-visit if you are a fan of opera.

The tickets for opera shows are almost always a sellout even before many people find out about the dates of the performances. Don’t wait too long to book yours.
