Classical Music Concerts

American classical music has been influenced by European classical music, American folk music, and even jazz (for contemporary classical music). The roots of American classical music were from the colonial period when religious music dominated the classical scene.

First New England School or the Yankee Tunesmiths created American classical music based on native folk style tunes and stayed away from the European influence.

Classical music in the US has changed over the years to become what it is today. Many classical music concerts happen in the country and attract large crowds every year. Check out the concert tickets on our website to book in advance.

History

We can look at the history of classical music in America by dividing it into three major sections. The First New England School (the Yankee truesmiths) consisted of self-taught composers and singers who developed a new form of classical music. Anthony Philip Heinrich is an example of how innovative amateur singers and composers were between 1770 and 1810. Benjamin Carr, James Hewitt, William Brown, and William Selby are some popular American classical music composers from this era.

Then came the Second New England School, sometime during the mid-19th century to grow and promote indigenous American music. John Knowles Paine was the leader of this movement. The 20th Century Classical Music was influenced by folk traditions. For example, George Gershwin was influenced by African-American music, while Leonard Bernstein loved the elements of Jazz, both of which are found in 20th-century classical music.

Immigrant composers like Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg also show how American classical music was changing according to the times and sociopolitical scenarios in the country.

Classical music went through many changes in the 20th century. The minimalism music movement began in the 1960s when composers like John Adams and Philip Glass began experimenting with sharper and abrupt sounds. Minimalism in music and art went in parallel during this period. By the 1970s and 80s, atonal music structures entered classic music and further pushed the boundaries of experimentation. John Cage was at the forefront of this trend.

Classical music continues to shift shapes as the years pass. Though it retains some of the original essences, new trends have given different dimensions to this genre.
