History of Bluegrass Music

Sometime in the 1600s, people from Ireland and Scotland moved to America, bringing their musical talents. The music spread across Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North and South Carolina, etc., as the settlers moved from one place to another.

The songs were country-styled with lyrics about country people, mountains, etc. It blended with African-American music in the Mississippi region and set the tone for modern-day bluegrass music in the US.

Bill Monroe from Kentucky is fondly considered the father of bluegrass music. He and his family were natives of Rosine and played string instruments along with an African slave friend.

There have been several bluegrass bands over the years, be it The Foggy Mountain Boys, Flatt & Scruggs, or others. The first bluegrass music festival was held in 1965 in Virginia. It was the same year the word Bluegrass Music officially appeared in the Music Index. However, it redirected people to Country Music and Hill Music until 1986. Finally, in 1987, Bluegrass music was listed under its title.

The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado takes place during the summer solstice and has a history of more than 25 years. Diverse bluegrass artists perform at the festival every year.
