Ice hockey is an incredibly popular sport in the US. It has such a great fan following that everyone from school and college students to adults participates in various ice hockey leagues. A widely loved ice hockey league that existed in the past includes the Central Hockey League or the CHL.

CHL Hockey was a minor professional league played amongst mid-level athletes. It existed between 1992 and 2014. Keep reading to find out more about the CHL.

How the CHL Came Into Being

The CHL was founded by two people involved in ice hockey - Ray Mirron and Bill Levins. In 1992, the League was centrally owned and included very few teams.

CHL later expanded gradually. And after Levins died, the ultimate trophy that CHL athletes could win was renamed the Levins cup in honor of him. Some of the leading teams that participated in the CHL leagues included the Oklahoma City Blazers, Tulsa Oilers, Dallas Freeze, etc.

After buying it from the founders, Global Entertainment Corporation ran the League from 2000 to 2013. During this time, the League flourished, with multiple teams from different US locations joining it. By the time the League ended in 2014, three of its teams had received NFL affiliations. These three teams included Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild, and Dallas Stars.

The CHL ran for 22 seasons, most of which received very high viewership both live and on television networks. Throughout this time, the team named Allen Americans won the most titles in the League.

A Winning Legacy

The legacy of CHL is worth celebrating. It gave ice-hockey players who weren’t at the level of NHL their due recognition. Moreover, it boosted the popularity of the sport throughout the country.
