Dokken
At a time when the charts were ruled by pop-metal acts, Dokken was a major attraction throughout the 1980s. With vocalist Don Dokken's captivating stage presence and guitarist George Lynch's high-energy style, the band combined rockers such as "Kiss of Death" and power ballads such as "Alone Again" in order to create a number of best-selling albums.
Dokken's roots date back to the late '70s, when Lynch, along with drummer Mick Brown, teamed up with Don Dokken to form the Boyz. In 1984, the band released Tooth and Nail, which featured the hit songs "Into the Fire," "Just Got Lucky," and "Alone Again." With heavy MTV and radio airplay, Dokken found themselves topping the charts worldwide, and Tooth and Nail eventually sold over one-million copies in the U.S. alone. Following a tour with the Scorpions, the group recorded Under Lock and Key in 1985, which had a similar success due to the hits "In My Dreams" and "It's Not Love."
In 1987, the band released Back for the Attack, which featured a track they had written as the subtitle for the third Nightmare on Elm Street film, "Dream Warriors." The coinciding music video, which included scenes of the band interacting with the movie's characters, was their most popular ever, and Back for the Attack became Dokken's third record to reach platinum status. The album's subsequent tour resulted in a live compilation, Beast From the East, which was released shortly before the band broke up in 1988 due to Don Dokken's and Lynch's creative differences. Dokken spent the 90’s and early 2000’s disbanding due to tension in the band and Don’s interest in a solo career. Many albums were release with not much success.
On March 1, 2010, Dokken digitally released Greatest Hits, a collection of re-recorded songs from their '80's albums along with two new tracks, to iTunes and Amazon.com. The physical album with additional tracks is set to release from King Records (Japan) on April 21, 2010.
Skid Row
In 1986 SKID ROW was born in a garage somewhere in Toms River, NJ, formed by founding members Snake Sabo and Rachel Bolan. They relentlessly pounded the New Jersey club circuit; packing houses wherever they performed. Fast forward to 1989…SKID ROW's debut album goes on to sell over 5 million copies in the USA, along with a tour that takes them around the world.
1992 the band releases their second record SLAVE TO THE GRIND which debuts at #1 on the Billboard charts, making them the first Heavy metal/Hard rock band to do so. Slave rockets to multi-platinum status. In 1995 band relationships severely strain, but they reluctantly go into the studio to record what was thought to be their final release SUBHUMAN RACE. Soon after, the band parted ways.
That was until late 1999 when founding members Rachel Bolan, Scotti Hill, and Snake Sabo decided that SKID ROW meant far too much to them let the music fade into rock obscurity. Texan singer Johnny Solinger, suggested through a mutual friend, was flown to New Jersey. “He had a quiet confidence about him when he walked through the front door”, says guitarist Snake. Rachel adds “We knew he was the guy half way through the first song of his audition. Johnny fit the bill to a T. Great voice, great attitude and was clear on what the band was about.” With a new frontman in place they needed a rock drummer. They turned to Atlanta native Dave Gara. Dave came into rehearsal and started playing and everything felt right. “It was like he had been in the band forever”, explains guitarist Scotti Hill.
If they thought things couldn’t get better, they did. In 2000 SKID ROW landed the coveted opening slot on the KISS Farewell Tour. It brought SKID ROW's music back to the hungry masses. The band then logged a few hundred thousand bus miles during which the band was busy writing new songs for their CD “THICKSKIN” that was released in 2003. That album put SKID ROW's past in perspective and future in place. SKID ROW also released the CD “REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE” in 2006. Since then Skid Row has toured relentlessly.
